Necessary

Music center (tape recorder), cord for connecting to a computer

Instructions

Step 1

To work with sound, we need special programs that have functionality for recording from external sources. Their choice is wide enough both among paid and among free solutions. For example Sound Forge, Audacity, Power Sound Editor Free. We will take further steps using the Sound Forge program as an example. Download and install the program from the developer's website.

Step 2

We connect a cassette recorder or a music center using a cord to the corresponding connector on the sound card. A tape recorder usually has only one output - a headphone jack. The music center allows you to get a better signal, and for this, tulip-type connectors are often provided on the back wall. In accordance with the connectors, we select the appropriate cord.

Step 3

Launch Sound Forge and click on the red round button on the toolbar. A window with audio recording options will open. We choose among the available devices for recording a sound card to which a tape recorder or a music center is connected. We turn on the playback of the cassette.

Step 4

If everything is connected correctly, then in the recording window we will see a working equalizer, signaling the volume level of the signal entering the computer. Using the volume control on the tape recorder and using the general mixer of the system, we adjust the signal so that the sound heard from the computer speakers is clear, without characteristic wheezing. At the same time, the equalizer should not fall into the red zone too often.

Step 5

After adjusting the sound in the Sound Forge window, click the "Start recording" button. We start playing the cassette.

Step 6

After the end of playback and stopping the recording, we will see a graphical image of the resulting material. If necessary, you can apply various effects to it, cut off excess silence, equalize frequencies - all this allows you to do the functionality of different programs for working with sound.

Step 7

The file obtained as a result of these operations is saved on the hard disk in the required encoding (mp3, wav, ogg, etc.).
