A wind turbine can be used to drive a small generator, thus receiving electricity for free. A home-made turbine develops a relatively low power, but it can be quickly made at home.

Instructions

Step 1

Take the faulty floor fan. Remove the impeller from it.

Step 2

Remove the largest stepper motor available from the defective large printer.

Step 3

Make an adapter that allows you to securely mount the impeller from the fan on the shaft of this motor. Strengthen it with this adapter.

Step 4

Attach the stepper motor itself securely to the stand so that its shaft is in a horizontal position.

Step 5

Connect two diodes to each of the wires leaving the engine. Connect one of the diodes with the anode to the wire, cathode to the positive power bus. Connect the other diode with the cathode to the wire, the anode to the negative power bus. Take the diodes themselves designed for a current of at least 2 A.

Step 6

Expose the turbine to wind. Measure the voltage at the output of the rectifier. Shunt the rectifier with a 200 μF electrolytic capacitor rated for four times the measured voltage. Observe the polarity when connecting this capacitor.

Step 7

Connect a pulse stabilizer made according to any of the known circuits to the output of the rectifier. Its input voltage should be equal to that removed from the rectifier, and the output voltage should be the one that is required.

Step 8

Install the wind turbine with generator in a location where it cannot be exposed to too strong wind (it can destroy it). Make sure its installation site is protected by a lightning rod. Also, there should be no people and pets at the location of the turbine, so that they do not get injured from its destruction in strong winds.

Step 9

Connect the load to the output of the switching regulator. In its capacity, depending on the power of the generator and the voltage at the output of the stabilizer, you can use, for example, an LED lamp, a radio receiver, a mobile phone. Do not use expensive devices as a load, which it is a pity to spoil by supplying power with incorrect parameters (voltage, ripple). If desired, also connect a small battery charger. This will allow you to have a certain amount of energy that will be used in the absence of wind.
