The reason for the loss of sound in the headphones can be either software or hardware. In the second case, it can be hidden in the headphones themselves, or in the device to which they are connected.

Instructions

Step 1

Check the position of the volume control on the device to which the headphones are connected. It can be adjusted both with a variable resistor and with buttons that give the controller commands to decrease or increase the signal level. Also check if the mute mode is turned on. In the computer, start the software mixer (its name depends on the OS used), then check the position of the knob called Master Volume or similar. Also check to see if the Output Jack Disable check box is checked.

Step 2

When headphones are not connected directly to the device, but through active speakers, you can adjust the volume on both devices. The coefficients set by their regulators are multiplied by each other: if at least one of them is set to zero, there will be no sound. Check their position.

Step 3

After making sure that the controls are set to the correct positions, but without producing sound, first check which jack the headphones are plugged into. The one that needs to be used can be colored green, or there can be a headphone icon next to it. If the device has built-in speakers (eg laptop, portable radio), these speakers must be switched off after plugging in the plug.

Step 4

If you find that there is no sound even with the correct connection, first check if there is a volume control on the headphones themselves. Slide it from the zero position. If the regulator is not present, or it is installed correctly, the absence of sound in one or both channels indicates a malfunction of the headphones, jack or amplifier themselves. If you do not know how to repair them, entrust this work to someone with the appropriate skills. All repair operations must be carried out with de-energized equipment.

Step 5

Some monaural devices, for example, analog dictaphones, are equipped with jacks, when connected to which even working stereo headphones will work only one channel. To make both work, make an adapter consisting of a stereo plug and a jack. At the plug, connect two wires to the near and far contact, and do not use the middle one. Connect one of the wires to the common terminal of the socket, and the other to the contacts of the left and right channels connected together.
