You can often hear from iPhone 2G owners that the back metal cover cannot be removed, and it is impossible to replace the battery. This is wrong. The back cover can be removed, but this is a rather laborious process. You need to stock up on a fair amount of patience and a number of tools in order to do everything correctly and without damaging your smartphone.

Instructions
Step 1
First, you need to insert a paperclip into the small hole that is located next to the headphone jack, and then you need to press the paperclip down so that the SIM card holder slides out of the phone case.
Step 2
Now take extra care when removing the SIM card holder from the iPhone 2G case.
Step 3
In this photo, two fastening holes are shown and highlighted in yellow, as well as two stops on the inside of the cover, which hold it. To release the two holes shown at the top of the photo, press the plane with the mounting holes towards the black panel.
Step 4
Next, you need to insert the tool between the dock connector and the antenna cover. The main thing is to be as careful as possible not to insert the tool inside the dock connector. Then you need to very gently push the tool up next to the mounting holes that we talked about in the previous step. It is important to ensure that there is a small gap between the black cover and the metal frame of the case.
Step 5
Now it is better to move on to using the special iPod opening tool. If it is not at hand, you should find something similar. This tool is needed in order to slightly separate the black panel from the metal frame of the case to form a small gap, and then repeat the same actions on the other side of the dock connector.
Step 6
Take the cover from both sides and pull it towards you and up. Such actions will require some effort. The cover may not be removable. Then you should check the presence of a gap between the lid and the metal frame, trying to increase it, and only after that remove the lid.
Step 7
The photo shows three screws that need to be removed.
Step 8
Patience is essential to removing the back cover of an iPhone 2G; you need a dental instrument to get under the metal cover through the tiny hole.
Step 9
You need to start removing the cover from the iPhone 2G from the side of the Home button. After inserting the tool into the hole, as shown in the photo, you should start moving the cover in different directions with the tool.
Step 10
Next, you need to lift the back panel with a dental instrument, doing this forcefully and quickly. If done slowly and carefully, the likelihood of panel damage increases.
Step 11
Using a plastic tool (stack), pry the cover off from the top of the case.
Step 12
Then do the same on the other side.
Step 13
Now you can lift the back metal panel with the tool. It is important to note that you should not completely remove the cover for now, because it is connected to the phone with the headphone cable (ribbon cable on top).
Step 14
Before disconnecting the headphone cable, once again make sure that the phone is turned off, and only then disconnect it from the board by prying it from below.
