Films are shot both with film cameras and digital. Currently, the latter are gaining popularity, because they significantly reduce the cost of production and have a lower cost. But you can shoot your own movie with an amateur camera.
Instructions
Step 1
Based on your image quality requirements and studio budget, decide how much you can spend on a movie camera. If you want to shoot one film and you have no further plans, then perhaps renting a movie camera will suit you. Then you can choose a more advanced model.
Step 2
If you are shooting a feature film, then choose a camera with good optics. It doesn't matter if you shoot films with film cameras such as Konvas or the modern RED ONE digital camera, optics will be critical everywhere. For example, about 400 filters were created for Krzysztof Kislewski's film "A Short Story of a Murder". And the film "Wild Field" directed by Mikhail Kalatozoshvili was shot entirely with mid-focus optics.
Step 3
If you're on a tight budget, check out digital cameras like the Canon MarkII 7D. These cameras have a video mode and give a very high picture quality, close to film. Renting such equipment will cost much less than a RED ONE camera. For example, one of the episodes of House Doctor was filmed with such a camera.
Step 4
If you are shooting documentaries, then bulky cameras with constantly changing lenses may not work for you. Look out for lightweight digital cameras that record HD images. For such a camera, all settings must be adjusted manually. They are controlled using buttons and rings. It is desirable that the camera has a microphone output.
Step 5
Conduct a camera test. Despite the declared parameters of sensitivity and color rendering, each camera is individual. Try to shoot in motion, in the dark or in poor light, adjust all settings. By testing your movie camera, you will be able to assess its capabilities. It is advisable to copy the image recorded during the trial and view it on different screens.
