The speaker is the end device for audio reproduction. It is characterized by sensitivity, internal impedance and sonic response. Loudspeakers are connected to transformer and transformerless amplifiers in different ways. The common thing is that it needs to be matched to the output impedance and power of the amplifier.

Necessary

  • - speaker;
  • - amplifier;
  • - ohmmeter;
  • - wires;
  • - soldering iron;
  • - pliers;
  • - screwdriver;
  • - solder and rosin.

Instructions

Step 1

The output impedance and power of the output stage of a transistor or transformerless amplifier must be known from the passport or calculated data. In this case, you only need to choose a speaker with the appropriate power and with the appropriate internal impedance. If the speaker resistance is not indicated in its label, measure it with an ohmmeter.

Step 2

Connect the speaker to the output stage of the amplifier using a standard connector or solder. In either case, it is not necessary to use a shielded wire to connect the devices. However, its cross-section must provide the required current strength. The more powerful the devices, the thicker the wire should be. Usually a stranded wire is used, and sometimes a special one called an acoustic cable.

Step 3

If the final stage of the amplifier is made according to a transformer circuit, then the basic principles of matching in resistance and power are exactly the same. But in this case, you can measure the output impedance of the amplifier, that is, the output winding of the transformer, using an autometer. This is useful when you are dealing with an amplifier you are not familiar with.

Step 4

When the speaker is connected to a transformer amplifier (such as a tube amplifier), a powerful humming sound may be heard from the speaker. In this case, swap the connection wires either on the transformer or on the speaker.

Step 5

It is often necessary to connect two or more speakers to one amplifier output stage. Remember that the speakers can be connected to each other in parallel or consecutively. At the same time, keep in mind that with a series connection, the internal impedances of the speakers are summed, and with a parallel connection, their reciprocal values. That is, 2 speakers of 4 Ohm in series can be connected to an amplifier having an output impedance of 8 Ohm. If the same speakers are connected in parallel, the amplifier impedance can be 2 ohms.

Step 6

Phase the speakers. After you connect them to a common circuit, connect the leads of this circuit, for example, with a galvanic cell. The diffusers of all speakers must be either pulled in or pushed out by their magnetic systems at the same time. If this is not the case, then reverse the polarity of some devices.
