Sometimes it becomes necessary to connect several computers to the same Internet connection line. But not many people know that you can use a regular ADSL modem as a router (router).

Necessary

ADSL modem, network hub (possibly), network cables

Instructions

Step 1

You should immediately pay attention to one very important factor: not all ADSL modems support router mode. You can determine this type of modems both by their appearance and by looking at the instructions for the device.

Step 2

If the ADSL modem has several Ethernet (LAN) ports, then it can most likely act as a router. But connecting multiple computers to a modem with one such port is easy. You just have to purchase a network hub as well. We will now consider such an example.

Step 3

Connect the ADSL modem to the Internet connection line. Typically, its functions are performed by a telephone line, to connect to which you need a splitter. This device is standard on many modems.

Step 4

Connect the network hub to the Ethernet port of the modem. Connect all computers from which you plan to access the Internet to the hub.

Step 5

Turn on one of the computers (laptops) and open the browser. Enter the IP address of the modem in its address bar. You can find it out by reading the user manual of this device.

Step 6

Find the WAN or Internet Connection Setup menu and open it. Set the required parameters for the desired items. Usually you need to specify the login and password for accessing the server, the type of data transmission channel and the encryption option. Save the settings.

Step 7

Open the LAN or LAN Settings menu. Select PPPoE or L2TP data transfer protocol. Turn on the DHCP function if supported by this unit. Save changes and reboot the modem.

Step 8

Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet. If this did not happen (and the reason may lie in the absence of the DHCP function), then open the local network settings on the computer. Enter a static IP address, and fill in the lines "Default gateway" and "Preferred DNS server" with the IP address of the ADSL modem

Step 9

Repeat the algorithm described in step eight on all other computers.
