In stationary telephones, there are two dialing modes: pulse and tone (tone). Most automatic telephone exchanges have already switched to tone-based operation. Old-style telephones with a rotary dialer work exclusively in a pulse mode.

Step 1
The pulse mode of the telephone set as such is a method of dialing telephone numbers, with the help of which the digits of the dialed number are sent to the PBX by step-by-step closing / opening of the telephone line. And the number corresponds to the digit being dialed. Everything is simple, but 10 impulses correspond to zero. The spaces between the numbers are encoded with a long pause.
Step 2
The tone mode is a method of dialing a phone number, in which sounds of different tonality are heard in the handset of the device. Each digit has its own tone. This mode is supported by mobile phones and modern stationary push-button devices. Only in the case of the tone mode, you can dial a number quickly enough or execute an additional command during a conversation, for example, when dialing to an autoinformer of a mobile communication provider.
Step 3
Based on the above information, you can easily determine which mode your telephone is currently in. If it is in the tone mode, sounds of different tones are heard in the phone receiver, if in the pulse mode - multiple clicks separated by pauses.
Step 4
If your phone is in pulse dialing, then in order to change it to tone, you need to dial an asterisk (*) in front of the phone number. It will look like this: * 8 "phone number". This button is located in the bottom row, to the left of zero. Just keep in mind that in this case, the dialing mode changes only for one phone call. Not very convenient, is it? In order not to suffer with this in the future, the dialing mode can be changed by switching the lever labeled “T / I” or the corresponding button. Most telephones have either one or the other.
Step 5
If you don't succeed, scroll through the instructions for the phone. And one more thing: if your telephone company still uses a pulse system, you cannot switch to tone mode, regardless of your telephone model.
