IDE devices can operate in DMA mode - direct memory access, and PIO - program I / O, when data is exchanged using the central processor. In PIO mode, the system is much slower.

Step 1
The operating mode is set in the BIOS. After turning on the computer, wait until the system prompt appears on the monitor to enter the Setup settings: “Press Delete to setup”. The BIOS designer can assign a different key, usually F2, F9, or F10. In the BIOS menu, find the item describing IDE devices. Set the DMA operating mode. Press F10 to exit and save the settings. Answer “Y” to the system question.
Step 2
After Windows boots up, use Win + R and enter devmgmt.msc to bring up Device Manager. Expand the IDE / ATAPI Controllers node. Call the context menu by right-clicking on the devices "Primary IDE channel" and "Secondary IDE channel". Check the "Properties" item and go to the "Additional parameters" tab. In the "Transfer Mode" line, select "DMA, if available."
Step 3
If it fails to change the mode, right-click on the channel icon and mark “Delete”. Click OK to confirm and restart your computer. After a reboot, the IDE mode will be selected automatically, or you will have the option to set it manually.
Step 4
If, while working under Windows, when accessing the hard disk or optical drive, the driver detects a large number of errors, the system automatically switches to PIO. Try to replace the loop - perhaps it is the cause of the malfunctions. Download and install the manufacturer-recommended IDE controller driver.
Step 5
Check the state of the hard drive with special test programs, for example, mhdd or Victoria. If the tests show a large number of bad sectors, you may need to take care of saving the information to other media.
Step 6
You can turn off registry error checking. To do this, open the program launch window with the Win + R combination and enter regedit. Find the branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesCdfs. Check the ErrorControl key and click Edit in the Edit menu. Enter the value "0" and restart your computer.
