It is absolutely impossible to imagine everyday life without a refrigerator. They come in a variety of colors, sizes and features ranging from the simplest and most basic to the most innovative.

What is No frost

The system no frost (know frost) in translation means "does not freeze". In another way, it can be called auto-defrosting, automatic defrosting, self-defrosting. The meaning of all these terms is the same: the technology that is responsible for defrosting the freezer in refrigerators.

No frost models are now offered by almost all manufacturing companies: LG, Samsung, Sharp, Hotpoint, Beko, Indesit, Electrolux, etc.

The defrosting mechanism heats up the cooling element of the refrigerator for a short period of time and melts the accumulated ice. The resulting water is discharged through a special compartment at the back of the refrigerator. The defrosting system is controlled by an electric or electronic timer: every 6, 8, 10, 12 or 24 hours the compression mechanism is activated and works from 15 minutes to half an hour. The defrost heater meets a standard wattage rating of 350 to 600 watts.

In older models of refrigerators, the mechanism worked for a long time, and customer feedback led to an improvement in the mechanism. In refrigerators of new models, the auto defrosting mechanism starts only if the compressor is running. Thus, the longer the refrigerator door is closed, the less energy is spent on defrosting. Alternatively, in some models of refrigerators, manufacturing companies choose hot gas heating.

Advantages

- No need to defrost the refrigerator manually: it saves labor and time.

- Food packaging is more transparent and it is easy to recognize the contents of the bag because it is not covered with snow / frost.

- Most frozen foods do not stick to each other.

- Smells are minimized as air is constantly circulating inside (especially in the total no frost versions).

- Better regulation of the temperature inside the freezer.

An automatic defrosting system is usually not a decisive criterion when choosing a refrigerator.

Flaws

- The system can be more energy intensive than conventional refrigerators.

- For safety reasons, the system must be connected to the heating element via a high power supply.

- Increasing complexity of electrical and mechanical configuration can increase the cost of parts.

- On hot days, condensation may leak from under the refrigerator door.

- The system may not work or skip the heating cycle on hot days or if the refrigerator is opened frequently.
