The difference between a regular number and a number with an extension is that the usual one is processed by the city PBX, and the second must be decoded by the mini-PBX, which is located in the office you are calling.

Tone Mode Telephone

Instructions

Step 1

The extension can be dialed only if the phone is switched from pulse to tone mode. To do this, just press the asterisk (*). For most phones, this will work. If your phone is switched to tone mode in another way, find out how to do it in the instructions.

Step 2

The most common way to enter an extension is to call the main number, wait for a response from the PBX, and then enter the extension. This is most often done. This method always works.

Step 3

Another method may work if your phone has a pause button for entering a number. In this case, you do not need to wait for a response from the PBX. Dial the main number, then press the pause symbol, then you can enter the extension. A pause can be indicated by a “P”.

Step 4

But not all PBX companies that require the introduction of extension numbers support the pause symbol, even if you have it on your phone. Some will greet you when you call, and then make you listen to the text. You can enter an extension only by letting the answering machine speak out fully. Usually, at the end of a speech, you may hear something like: "… Wait for the operator to answer or after the beep, enter the extension number." A signal follows and the extension can now be entered. All characters entered before the signal are ignored by such a PBX.

Step 5

Some phones have a Flash button that provides access to the PBX functionality. But again, not all PBXs support this button. To enter an extension, you need to press Flash, then dial the required additional digits.

Step 6

You can simulate the action of the Flash button by hitting the lever very briefly and quickly. This method may work for some phones, but not all. Some will disconnect, while others will allow you to enter an extension without waiting for a response from the system.
