How to enter the router settings?

It is necessary

  • A computer
  • Router
  • Internet browser
  • Keyboard

Instructions

Step 1

The procedure for setting up the router itself is quite simple. But many have a problem in finding a window where to enter these settings. There are no special programs for routers that would be an attachment to a new router. In this case, it would be enough to install them on the computer and then perform all actions through it. But unfortunately there is no such program. Therefore, often attempts to independently configure the router lead to such a result that a computer specialist is called to the house, for whose work it will be necessary to pay. There are only two ways how you can change the settings of the router.

Step 2

First, you need to decide what you need to go into the router settings for. Fortunately for many, this has to be done most often only in two cases. When you just bought it and you need to make the initial setup when connecting, or when you decide to change the provider that provides you with Internet services. If in the first case there were no settings before and it is necessary to enter them, then in the second case the settings from the old provider simply become irrelevant and new data must be entered.

Step 3

Before you start making the settings, you need to connect the router to your laptop or computer correctly and be sure that the connection is working correctly. To connect according to all the rules, you will need a computer or laptop that has a working network card, a router and a cable, which is usually included with the router. If you don't have a network cable, you can get one at any computer store. You will need an RJ-45 network cable. Connect your computer to a Wi-Fi router using a cable. The router has more than one connector, but you need to connect via the Ethernet or Internet connector. Connect your router to the network through the power connector and click the "Enable" button.

Step 4

Now you need to perform some manipulations on your personal computer. The actions are quite simple and do not require any additional knowledge. You need to move your mouse to the lower right corner and find the monitor icon with an Internet connector, this icon is called the network status icon. Right-click on it (in some computers you can simply left-click) and select the "Network and Sharing Center" menu item. In the window that opens, in the left side menu, select the "Change adapter settings" section.

Step 5

Find exactly the connection that is used to work your router in conjunction with a computer. Click on it with the right mouse button and in the menu that appears, select the "Properties" section. A separate window of properties of the connection of interest will open. Select the "Network" subsection. You will see a list of checked components used by this connection. You only need to find one item from the entire list: "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4)". The protocol properties window of the requested Internet version will open. In it, you need to put a tick in front of the item in order to receive the IP address in automatic mode. In addition, it is also necessary to obtain the address of the Dns server automatically. So don't forget to check the box there as well. Then just press the "Ok" button to save the changes in the settings.

Step 6

To enter the settings of the router, you can try using any Internet browser installed on your computer. In this case, the router must be connected to a computer or laptop with a network cable. In the address bar, enter the ip of your router, which is indicated in the instructions attached to it. Although different routers have different nuances of entering the settings menu, almost all manufacturers set the addresses for the router the same. For example: 192.168.0.1; 192.168.1.1; 192.168.1.253.

Step 7

Next, you need to enter your username and password. If you have not changed these parameters, then they are approximately the following for all manufacturers: login - admin, password - admin; login - admin, password - leave blank; login - Admin (with a capital letter), password - leave blank. Some models may have different data. They must be indicated in the instructions for the router. If the login and password are correct, you will be taken to the main page of the router, where all the basic settings are made.

Step 8

If you do not have instructions for the router, then you can see the login and password on the router itself. Most devices have a special label with basic information on the bottom panel. In addition to the router model number and power type, you will see the "default settings" item. This is data for standard settings, where the number of the ip-address of the router, login and password data is indicated. If the label is missing or has been removed, then there is another way to find out the information you need. You just need to go to the network connection details section and find the item that specifies the default IPv4 gateway.

Step 9

By default, the login and password of the router are the same - admin. But it may not fit when you enter it in a special window. Then, most likely, you previously changed them and simply forgot about it. In this case, there is only one thing left - to reset the changed settings using a special function for this. On the router, you just need to press the "reset" button. From this moment on, your login and password will again become standard data. But the best thing is when you change any settings in the router, write new data into your diary or create a special text file where you save your new settings.
