Coaxial cables are often connected to BNC connectors. They do not require soldering, and are connected by crimping, similar to modern RJ connectors. But crimping them involves the use of an even rarer tool than a soldering iron.
Instructions
Step 1
Make sure that the equipment to which the cable is connected is de-energized. Also make sure that no high frequency energy, even of low power, is supplied to the cable from anywhere. Hereinafter, de-energization means not only switching off, but also disconnecting from the supply network. Use a cable such that its characteristic impedance corresponds to that specified in the documentation for the equipment used. The same goes for the connectors.
Step 2
Pick up the handset that came with the connector. Put it on the cable in advance before stripping it.
Step 3
Strip the cable so that the distance between the stripping point of the outer sheath and that of the inner sheath is about 5 mm. The central core should protrude from the sheath by about 10 to 15 millimeters. When watching the video, the link to which is given at the end of the article, remember that it is highly undesirable to use a knife for this, as shown there. Nippers are much less traumatic, and it is they who are recommended to be used for stripping any wires.
Step 4
Bend the braid towards the outer sheath in such a way as to completely eliminate its short circuit to the central core.
Step 5
Insert the center conductor into the hole in the connector so that the inner insulation is pressed against its body.
Step 6
Transfer the center conductors to the cylinder located on the connector.
Step 7
Move the tube that you put on the cable before performing the operation so that it is on top of not only the cylinder, but also the braid.
Step 8
Use a special tool for crimping BNC connectors. Slip it over the tube and squeeze.
Step 9
Make sure that the device to which you want to connect the cable is also de-energized and does not generate high frequency energy. Insert the plug into the BNC outlet you want to connect to. Align the notches on the plug with the tabs on the outlet. Turn the nut on the plug to the right until you hear a click.
Step 10
Remember that BNC connectors are non-removable. It is impossible to remove such a connector from the cable after crimping.
