A subwoofer is a special audio device that produces a deep sound of very low frequencies. All home theaters and powerful audio systems are equipped with them without fail. In common people, a subwoofer is sometimes called "bass", which fully corresponds to its acoustic characteristics: it emits a sound of exclusively bass frequencies.

According to the laws of acoustics

To install your subwoofer correctly, you need to know some basic laws of acoustics. One of them reads as follows: low frequencies sound more clearly if they are absorbed by any surface. Therefore, it is advisable to place a subwoofer of any model on a flat and smooth surface, on which there are no visible obstacles for sound waves. In this case, bass frequencies are better perceived if they come from the bottom up.

The easiest way to connect a subwoofer with an amplifier to a front two-way speaker system is through the line input. To adjust the sound of the front and rear systems, it is best to use the amplifier's line level input dedicated specifically for the subwoofer.

In this case, the tweeters are connected to the active HF filters, and the third and fourth channels are connected to the active HF and LF filters. In turn, the subwoofer is directly connected to the low-pass filter. The use of passive crossovers is not recommended, but the built-in filter of the audio system can be used instead.

What do you need to know to install the subwoofer correctly?

There are three basic options to install the subwoofer yourself. The first two methods involve installing the subwoofer along with the speakers. So, the subwoofer can be built either into the front speakers or into their stands. They can be placed absolutely in any place, since low frequencies do not need directional sound radiation. The third option is to install the subwoofer as a separate device. It is better to place it on the floor, in one of the corners of the room. In this case, its sound will be most harmoniously perceived.

Experts believe that even a low power subwoofer should be located at least 1 meter away from the TV screen. This will protect its CRT from damage by acoustic waves.

After completing the installation of the subwoofer, be sure to test it. The bass frequencies of this device should sound deep and clear and cause a slight vibration on the floor. If this is not the case, carefully check that you have connected everything correctly.
