Modern car battery chargers are able to provide a high degree of safety during the charging process, thanks to special integrated circuits, protection systems and analog indicator circuits. As a result, the charger transformer converts the 220V mains voltage to 17-20V. Battery care is not difficult. You just need to periodically check the electrolyte level in it.

Step 2

Low electrolyte levels are usually the result of overcharging associated with a faulty alternator. Lack of electrolyte in at least one of the cells can completely destroy the battery. There is a variety of maintenance-free batteries. Their upper part is tightly closed with a sealed cover. However, this design has a serious drawback - in case of loss of electrolyte, it was no longer possible to top up.

Step 3

When replenishing the battery, do not forget the following feature - when charging, the electrolyte level rises, so add it very carefully. Spilled acid can seriously damage the battery housing and fill the room with harmful toxic fumes. During the charging process, safety issues are of utmost importance. A spark when the terminal is disconnected is enough to provoke an explosion of great force as a result of the release of oxygen and hydrogen. A battery explosion can cause very serious injury.

Step 4

The first step is to decide on the place where you will charge the battery. Since you may have to top up electrolyte, which contains sulfuric acid, it is best to do this in a well-ventilated area - preferably on a balcony or loggia. In addition to the charger, prepare a rubber bulb, glass tube, hydrometer and thermometer.

So, first, measure the electrolyte level in the battery, for which unscrew the plugs at the top of it. The task is simplified if your battery has a translucent body. To bring it in line with the norm, top it up to a level that will be between the “min” and “max” marks. The electrolyte level in a battery with an opaque casing is determined using a glass tube. To do this, insert it all the way and pinch the tube with your thumb and pull the tube out. The normal level is 10-15 mm.

Step 6

After that, drain the electrolyte back and repeat the operation with the remaining cans. If the electrolyte level is less than the minimum, then add distilled water to the required level. After two hours, you can measure the density of the electrolyte. This is how long it takes for it to mix with water. The density of the electrolyte is measured with a hydrometer.

Step 7

The battery should be recharged if its density is less than that indicated in the instructions by 0.02 g / cm3. To do this, connect the wires of the charger to the terminals of the battery in such a way that the poles coincide, and then turn on the charger. The charging current should correspond to 0.1 of the battery capacity. During the charging process, carefully monitor the value of the charging current, temperature and density of the electrolyte. If the 40-degree mark is exceeded, the charging current should be reduced by half or the charging should be suspended until the electrolyte cools down to 270.

Step 8

You will know that the battery is fully charged after two hours by the boiling point of the electrolyte, while its density should not change. Complete the charging process in the following sequence: first, disconnect the charger and only then - the wires from the battery.
