Shielding is an effective way to both reduce the susceptibility of a cable to interference, and to reduce the intensity of the interference itself. If the cable is not shielded, you can make it so using improvised means.

Instructions

Step 1

Before shielding the cable, consider whether this procedure can be dispensed with. Consider, in particular, the possibility of transferring one of the amplifier stages from the input device to the output device. In this case, the level of the signal transmitted through the cable will increase, and the sensitivity of the input device will decrease. As a result, the ratio of the signal amplitude to the same interference indicator will change in such a way that the influence of the interference is reduced.

Step 2

Turn off the power to the devices that connect the cable to each other. Disconnect the cable from each one.

Step 3

If the cable does not have a common sheath, inside which all the conductors are stretched, wrap it without gaps with ordinary electrical tape to obtain such a sheath.

Step 4

Use regular aluminum foil for food storage. Wrap the outer sheath of the cable, leaving about 1.5 centimeters of unwrapped sections from each of the connectors.

Step 5

Next to each connector, wrap about twenty turns of bare tinned wire around the foil, stretching the turns of the winding a few centimeters apart. Bring it out a short length.

Step 6

Completely wrap the improvised screen with another layer of electrical tape, leaving no gaps.

Step 7

Connect the shield to the housings of both devices, except in cases where this is unacceptable according to safety regulations. In the second case, connect it to the body of only one of the devices. Which one, establish empirically to minimize interference. In this case, in no case touch simultaneously the screen output and the case of the device to which it is not connected, as well as the cases of both devices.

Step 8

Never use any shielded cable in place of coax, or for carrying significant currents or voltages. In particular, do not allow the passage of significant currents through the screen.
