When checking a television cable, much depends on whether we are talking about a collective antenna installed in a multi-storey building, or it is an antenna in a private household. In the first case, you do not have access to both ends of the cable, so you only have to take measurements from the side of the antenna plug.

Step 2

Measure the resistance between the central core and the cable sheath with a tester (multimeter), normally it should be several tens of ohms. If it is infinitely large, it indicates a break. Conversely, if it is close to zero, a short circuit has occurred. Ask your neighbors if they have a TV signal. If there is, then the malfunction should be looked for in the area from the junction box in the entrance to the antenna plug.

Step 3

If you live in a private house and have access to both ends of the cable, first disconnect the cable from the TV (pull out the plug) and from the antenna - in the latter case, you may need to unscrew a few screws. Now check the center core and the braid for a short circuit, the resistance of a working cable should be infinite. Next, close the central core and braid on one side and check the resistance on the other side with a tester, it should be close to zero. This indicates that the cable is working properly.

Step 4

To check the cable coming from the satellite dish, you must disconnect both F-connectors - from the receiver and the antenna converter. Next, check the center core and sheath for a short circuit (short circuits are a malfunction). Then, having closed them at one end, to the integrity - the resistance should be almost zero.

Step 5

If the cable is OK, look elsewhere for the cause of the problem. In the event that the device indicates an open circuit, try to estimate where the most vulnerable point of the cable is. Usually these are areas that are swayed by the wind or have sharp bends. The joints of the cable sections are also vulnerable, they must be checked first. Try to use the whole cable, connections will negatively affect the reception quality. If you have to connect pieces of cable, be sure to solder the joints and carefully insulate. The closure of the central core and the braid usually occurs precisely at the connection points or in the antenna plug.
