What is USB OTG

USB On-The-Go is a kind of adapter, thanks to which the owner of any mobile device can connect to it: keyboard, mouse, hard drives, removable batteries, etc. Thus, it turns out that thanks to the USB OTG cable, you can literally turn any smartphone into a kind of computer.

At its core, the USB OTG cable is very similar to the standard cables that charge and transfer data on various smartphones and tablets. On one side, the cable has an external USB port, and on the other side, a Micro-USB plug. As you might guess, you can connect any peripheral devices via the USB OTG cable only to those smartphones and tablets that have a Micro-USB input connector.

Technical features

As you know, the technical features of the Android operating system are very similar to the Linux system. Thus, it turns out that the devices support all the same file systems as Linux and the transfer of files stored in a particular file system is supported by the USB OTG cable. The list of supported file systems is FAT 16, FAT 32, ext3 and ext4 (since OS Android 2.3). Of course, the stated requirements do not always correspond to what is actually obtained. In practice, everything depends only on the implementation of the system and on nothing else. In addition, the manufacturer of a smartphone or tablet may limit the list of peripheral devices that can be connected. No problems should arise when working with the following types of smartphones: Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy S4, Nexus family, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Acer Iconia Tab A200, Acer Iconia Tab A500, Sony Tablet S, Sony Xperia Acro S, Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia ZL, LG Optimus G, LG G2 and Sony Xperia Sola.

As for the connection itself, then any problems with this are unlikely to arise. It is enough to install one end of the USB OTG cable into the smartphone, and connect any peripheral device to the other end. After the phone recognizes it, a corresponding message will appear. After that, you can start experimenting with connecting a wide variety of devices. For example, the utterly familiar keyboard and mouse will bring convenience when working with a smartphone. Joysticks from consoles will allow you to get the most out of games (not all games support such controls). With the help of flash drives, you can transfer data to your phone and perform many of the usual actions with it. In addition, you can connect some removable hard drives and removable batteries.
