In our time, there is an acute problem with nutrition. It's not about the volume, but its quality. There are many food classifications and labels. Often, the buyer does not fully understand what is written on the product packaging: some codes in digital and letter formats. But all these designations give a complete picture of the product that you want to purchase. The most common is the barcode. It is located directly on the package.

Step 1

Another name is bar code. It is a graphic image in the form of strokes and stripes, above which numbers and letters are located in the proper sequence. It is needed for computer systems that use it to recognize all information about a given product. It is very convenient and practical. Also, using the barcode, the country of the product manufacturer is recognized.

Step 2

Almost every developed country has its own code of this kind, expressed in numbers on the packaging. But over time, the barcode began to replace another designation. With the adoption of a code structure that is suitable for all countries, a new era has come for products. It was made possible first by the European, and then by the changed status of the International Association of Product Numbering.

The new code was developed based on the American UPC (Universal Product Code) code. This is how the new, world-famous abbreviation EAN got its life. Later it moved to EAN 13 (this is due to the number of digits).

I would also like to note that, despite the popular opinion, the digital code of the product itself means practically nothing.

Step 3

Nowadays, a huge number of different codes have already been developed, for example, such as: Aztec Code, Data Matrix, Microsoft Tag, and so on.

The first three digits, which take the first place in the EAN code, indicate the nationality of the product. For example: the capital digits of the code 460-469 are assigned to Russia, 482 to Ukraine.

The next 4-6 digits indicate the manufacturer's or seller's code for this product.

The remaining 3-5 digits are produced to code the product itself. The last digit, 8, is used to check that the scanner reads the strokes correctly.
