Even today, when the capacity of memory cards is calculated in gigabytes, sometimes it becomes necessary to increase the total duration of audio recordings on the medium. Even more often, this problem arises before those who still prefer to use analog tape recorders and voice recorders.

Instructions

Step 1

Invest in a larger memory card. Nowadays, their cost is relatively low and sometimes for large cards is less than 100 rubles per gigabyte.

Step 2

Audio quality is characterized by two parameters: oversampling rate and bit depth. Decreasing the first parameter lowers the upper limit of the frequency range, and the second narrows the dynamic range of the recording. However, if the deterioration of these characteristics suits you, for example, you are recording speech, try experimenting with decreasing the values of these parameters.

Step 3

Use a compressed recording format instead of an uncompressed one. For example, instead of AU or WAV, use MP3 - this will allow you to reduce the file size several times with a slight deterioration in quality and while maintaining the oversampling frequency and bit depth. If the degradation is not to your liking, use a lossless compression format called FLAC. The information contained in the audio file will not change in any way, but its volume will only be halved.

Step 4

Try to achieve a further reduction in the size of the audio file by using a more modern compression format such as Vorbis OGG or WMA.

Step 5

On an analog tape recorder or dictaphone, achieve an increase in the recording time on a medium of a given volume by reducing the speed. But remember that playback at reduced speeds is not supported by all devices. Some cassette recorders allow you to reduce the speed from 4.76 to 2.4 cm / s, and reel-to-reel - from 9.5 to 4.46.

Step 6

Not all 4-track recorders and voice recorders are stereo. Devices that are simultaneously four-track and monaural are quite rare, however, they allow you to double the recording time on one medium (reel or cassette) while maintaining the speed. But this also raises the problem of compatibility of the produced phonogram with other tape recorders.
