Nowadays, not every PC user can boast that he has a 1 TB (terabyte) hard drive. There is a lot of information, and there is less and less space for it. In this case, either buying and installing another hard drive in the power supply unit, or buying an external (portable) hard drive, can help. The latter have recently become more and more popular.

Instructions

Step 1

If speed is not the most important criterion for you (after all, external hard drives are inferior to internal ones in this regard), an external hard drive will be the best option for you. Their speed will be quite enough for watching movies or listening to music from them, so you can safely move your collections to them. Only now, with copying large enough volumes of information from portable disks, things are not in the best way.

Step 2

Obviously, portable disks are somewhat more expensive than internal HDDs, but they have some advantages: the system unit does not need to be disassembled, the disk can be carried everywhere, the external hard disk is a fairly safe storage for important data (just disconnect the portable disk if you are afraid of attacks on your PC).

Step 3

When buying a portable disk, you should pay attention to the so-called form factor - 2, 5 or 3.5 inches. External HDD models of 3, 5 inches usually need additional power from the mains, while 2, 5 are easily bypassed with a USB port. In lightness and compactness, the 2.5-inch model is also superior to 3.5.

Step 4

Capacity. You shouldn't have any problems with this parameter. The choice of capacities is the widest - from several tens of GB (gigabytes) to several TB (1 TB - 1024 GB).

Step 5

Attention should also be paid to the connection interface - USB, SATA, SATA2, eSATA, FireWire. You are free to choose what is closest to you, just do not forget to check the availability of the necessary free connectors on your PC before doing this. Remember also that while USB ports are present on all modern computers, eSATA and other connectors are not everywhere. Consider this if you intend to transfer data from one computer to another.

Step 6

There are other characteristics, such as MTBF hours / cycles, spindle speed, average search speed and buffer size, but they are not decisive when choosing a portable hard disk and models of such HDDs of the same price range are identical.
