Exposure is the time for which the shutter of the camera is opened for the light rays to hit the photosensitive element. The correctness of the shutter speed will determine how bright and clear the picture will be.

Step 1
The easiest way to determine the shutter speed is to let the camera do it. Search your camera for automatic shutter speed and aperture mode or aperture priority mode. The camera will select the optimal values by itself.
Step 2
If you can't use auto mode, or you want to experiment with light, set it to manual mode or shutter priority mode. Shutter speeds can range from 1/8000 of a second to infinity (depending on the camera model). In order to correctly determine the shutter speed, remember the basic values in different lighting conditions.
Step 3
Approximate shutter speeds: 1/1000 - 1/500 - shooting subjects in motion; 1/500 - shooting on a bright sunny day; 1/250 - 1/60 - shooting in various lighting conditions (cloudy day, shade, well-lit room and etc.); 1/125 - shooting in a photo studio; 1/30 - shooting on a cloudy day, indoors; 1/15 and longer - shooting in low light conditions, a tripod is required.
Step 4
Remember to use faster shutter speeds when shooting moving subjects. For example, this applies to shooting sports events, animals, dancing people, etc. However, there should be enough light to make sure objects are sharp and bright. Use a slow shutter speed when shooting with a tripod in low light conditions, and for creating special effects (pouring water, movement, etc.).
