It is noteworthy that the concept of a megapixel (Mp), invented by marketers, not technologists, is used to characterize and assess the quality of a variety of photographic and video equipment. Megapixels determine, first of all, the dimension of the matrix in the equipment and, accordingly, the maximum possible number of points in the image that can be obtained with its help.
Megapixel
The prefix "mega" means "million." A pixel is a unit of an image, that is, the minimum points with a certain hue, from which a raster image of a photograph or a video frame is composed. The more points and the smaller their size, the better the image is seen by the eyes due to the impossibility of separating very small points from one another.
Using the concept of megakipsel
There are several different ways to characterize the number of pixels that make up a picture. Firstly, this is the size of the picture in the number of points, that is, how many dots fit in the width and length of the picture, for example 1920X1200. Secondly, it is the number of pixels that fit in one square inch. You can find this parameter in the characteristics of smartphones or monitors, for example 260 dpi (dot per inch). Thirdly, these are the same megapixels that determine the total number of pixels for the entire image.
Megapixels are obtained by multiplying the number of dots by the width and length of the image. For example, for a picture with a resolution of 1920X1200, you can calculate approximately 2.3 megapixels. A lot or a little depends mainly on the size in centimeters or inches of the picture when it is viewed by a person.
Although the widely advertised concept of "megapixel" is one of the characteristics of photographic equipment, it does not determine the quality of the resulting photographs. In addition to this characteristic, many other factors also affect quality.
In the context of photo and video equipment, megapixels determine the dimension of the matrix. As a result, this will determine the maximum size of the resulting image, at which the pixel size will be small enough and will not be noticeable separately, making up a single image with neighboring pixels.
What a megapixel can mean
What megapixels can characterize is the size of the picture in bytes, kilobytes and megabytes, and accordingly you can judge the place on the memory card or hard drive that the image will take. As a result, you can calculate the maximum number of images themselves that will fit on the medium.
The size of the resulting photo is also affected by the file format in which the picture is saved. The format determines the degree of compression and archiving when not every pixel is saved individually.
To understand the optimal number of megapixels, for example, when choosing a camera, you can do simple calculations. If the bulk of photographs, for example, will be printed on A4 sheets with an optimal print quality of 300dpi, then it is easy to calculate the number of megapixels in the picture that will be required for this. A4 size is 8, 3x11, 7 inches, that is, 2490x3510 dots or approximately 8, 7 megapixels with the selected print quality.
