Fourth generation data transmission networks are capable of providing Internet access at speeds of up to 100 megabits per second, and if the subscriber device does not move, then up to 1000. Currently, several operators of such networks operate in the Russian Federation.

Historically, the first Internet provider of the WiMax standard in Russia was the Scartel company, which renders its services under the Iota trademark. In 2008, she deployed WiMax networks in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Interestingly, until April 2009, access was provided in test mode for free. Iota currently operates in several large Russian cities. In May 2012, the Moscow segment of the network was switched from the WiMax standard to LTE. At the same time, the subscriber equipment was replaced for the most loyal customers.

The second Russian 4G provider, Comstar, serves subscribers only in Moscow, but still uses the WiMax standard. But this operator has one advantage: it is possible to purchase not only stationary, but also pocket routers, similar to those intended for 3G networks. With such a device in his pocket, the subscriber can connect to it a smartphone that does not have a WiMax module, but only WiFi.

Comstar is part of the same organization - AFK Sistema - as the mobile operator MTS. The latter, in turn, plans to deploy its 4G network in the near future. It is already known that it will operate not only in Moscow, but also in other cities of Russia.

In the spring of 2012, communication services of the fourth generation began to be provided by the mobile operator Megafon. One model of the LTE standard modem went on sale, and, until mid-July 2012, the network is being operated in test mode. But even during this period, free access is only if the subscriber is located in the same region in which he entered into an agreement with the operator.

The disadvantage of all 4G networks is the overpriced subscription fee for unlimited access. It exceeds the cost of the same service in EDGE and 3G networks by five to eight times. Therefore, first of all, this method of accessing the Internet will interest those for whom the data transfer speed is more important than the price.
