iPod is the trademark name for a series of portable media players from Apple that are equipped with flash memory or hard disk as storage media. The first of the devices went on sale on October 23, 2001. By September 5, 2007, over 110 million iPod audio players have been sold worldwide.
Apple founder Steve Jobs came up with a suitable slogan for the device: "1000 songs in your pocket." At the same time, the name of the player was chosen, not related to music and songs. The reason for this was the fact that during the first presentations of the novelty, Steve Jobs often described the possibility of connecting various mini-devices for storing information to a computer. Once one of the journalists named Vinnie Chieco, seeing the prototype of the player, expressed his impression with the words from the film "Odyssey 2001": "Open the pod bay doors!" ("Open doors to capsules!") - the device demonstrated by Steve Jobs reminded him so strongly of science fiction films about space. A capsule or in English "Pod" is a small streamlined chamber that is used for evacuation from a spacecraft. The name stuck and with the addition of the proprietary prefix "i" turned into an iPod.
IPod functional features
The iPod line now includes the iPod classic, iPod nano, iPod touch, and the screenless iPod shuffle. iPod nano and iPod classic replace the compact iPod mini. They use a hard disk to store information, while other models are equipped with flash memory. Like most modern digital players, iPods can be connected to a computer via a USB interface as external drives, however, music download for playback on the player is performed only through the proprietary iTunes program, which is available only for Mac OS and Windows operating systems.
The iPod music audio players are considered the benchmark for music reproduction and are distinguished by their high sound quality. The devices are molded with an exquisite design of the case, interspersed with aluminum. However, they can play both audio and video files. The battery life of the device is up to 30 hours of continuous playback. Audio players are available with different memory sizes, which also determines their cost. In addition, the iPod was the first touch-enabled audio playback device.
