Apple provides its users with the option to update the firmware via iTunes. But if the program interface only allows you to "raise" the used software version, then installing an alternative firmware will allow you to get extended functionality and the most stable operation of the device.

Instructions
Step 1
If you have an iPod running iOS 4 (iPod 3, iPod 4), then installing the firmware will be quite simple. To do this, download the required software version from any site dedicated to Apple devices, connect the device to the computer via a cable and run the downloaded file. Follow the iTunes instructions.
Step 2
Updating your iPod with alternative firmware is a little different. Connect your device to your computer with a cable. Download the Rockbox firmware zip file for your model of unit, which can be found on the Internet.
Step 3
Download ipodpatcher app, ipod_fw and downloader from Rockbox official website. The files must match your player model. Place all files in "C: / rockbox".
Step 4
Close iTunes. To avoid problems during flashing, disable the automatic launch of the program when the iPod is connected using the corresponding menu item. Check the box that you allow the device to be used as an external drive.
Step 5
Open the "Start" - "Run" menu and type "cmd". A black window will open, in which first enter the "c:" command. Then press "Enter" and type "cd rockbox".
Step 6
Determine which disc your iPod is currently using. To do this, enter "ipodpatcher 0". If the prompt does not indicate a device is present, enter "ipodpatcher 1" followed by "ipodpatcher 2". Select the value until the program detects your player. Remember the number that was assigned.
Step 7
Enter “ipodpatcher –r N bootpatition.bin”, where N is equal to the number that was set by the previous command. Copy the newly created "bootpartition" file, but leave the original in the same folder.
Step 8
Enter “ipod_fw –o apple_os.bin –e 0 bootpartition.bin”. If you have an iPod 4G, then run the command “ipod_fw –g 4g –o rockboot.bin –I apple_os.bin bootloader-4g.bin”. If you have an iPod color, replace all 4g in the previous command with color. If you are a Nano user then replace “4g” with “nano”.
Step 9
Disconnect the player from your computer. After the device generates an error that says there is no Rockbox, reconnect the cable. Drop the ".rockbox" folder and the "rockbox.ipod" file (located in the archive with the firmware) to the root directory of the device.
Step 10
Alternative firmware is installed. Download themes for Rockbox, drop them into the root directory of your ipod unzipped. When starting the firmware, select the downloaded theme, reboot. Installation completed.
