Ultrabook is one of the newest phenomena in the world of electronics. Not so long ago, liquid crystal display manufacturers could not even dream of the screen thickness that ultrabooks now have. As you might guess from the name, this is a very light and thin laptop, which in most of its characteristics is not inferior to the usual one.
The history of ultrabooks began when Toshiba, a well-known electronics manufacturer, introduced a laptop that was much thinner and lighter than most competitors with similar features. This happened in 1996, and the series of notebooks was called Toshiba Libretto. The line of these devices was called subnotebooks, it was a marketing technique that made it possible to distinguish products from the whole mass of laptops, turning them into a separate class. This is how the history of the predecessors of Ultrabooks began. In 2008, Apple released its subnotebook, the MacBook Air, a very thin and light computer that can run on battery power for a long time. When this device appeared on the market, there simply did not exist similar in class and characteristics. The users liked the novelty, the very high sales of the MacBook Air led to the fact that other major manufacturers also adopted the idea. Dell, Lenovo, Sony Vaio and Samsung began to make thin and light devices with full functionality, they all went into work and the race began: who will make a thinner, more powerful, long-lasting and lighter computer. The term "ultrabook" was coined when Intel introduced a new class of notebooks in 2011 that claimed to be a continuation of the idea of subnotebooks, but significantly different from them. Despite the new word, Intel in its device widely used the ideas created by Apple for the MacBook Air and iPad. Currently, ultrabooks and netbooks are in the greatest demand among users. And subnotebooks, which have already become a traditional option, are gradually disappearing from the scene. According to Greg Welsh, a spokesman for Intel's ultrabook division, over time, new devices, which will also be tablets, will occupy their niche in the electronics market, and this will be a significant part of all notebooks produced. A classic ultrabook is slightly larger than a netbook, but smaller than a laptop. The thickness of the device is no more than 2 cm, the diagonal of the display is usually from 11 to 13.3 inches. The weight of the ultrabook does not exceed 1.5 kg. Due to their size limitations, Ultrabooks are not equipped with disc drives, and they usually have few different ports. In terms of cost, netbooks and ultrabooks differ significantly. While an average netbook can be purchased for about $ 400, an ultrabook will cost 2-2.5 times more. This is considered to be a more prestigious option. In the plans of manufacturers are currently listed ultrabooks with a touchscreen display.
