To start using the detector, set it to the zero zone. If the metal detector is to be used at a different altitude from the one at which the zero adjustment was made, then additional adjustment using the Sens or Balance knob may be required. How do you use a metal detector?
Instructions
Step 1
Test your device in an area free of large metal objects. Just lay out a couple of objects such as a piece of pipe, a hanger, etc. After setting up the metal detector, grab it by the strap or handle and start slowly moving it over the laid out objects. When moving the hose, keep it straight, as the setting may change and after that false signals will be sent, or a deterioration in sensitivity will occur.
Step 2
As you get closer to a metal object, the signal will increase, as well as the reading of the instrument making the measurement. As soon as you find yourself above the metal object itself, the sound and readings of the device will reach their maximum value. If you start moving away from a metal object, the sound and the meter reading will fade. To pinpoint the location of the item you are looking for, mark the location where the signal peaked. Then walk back a little and mark again. The item you are looking for should be located in the center of the intersection of 2 lines.
Step 3
To more accurately identify the object, move towards it at right angles to the previous movement and mark again as you did earlier. Now the object you are looking for will be located in the center of the intersection of 4 lines. If you need to determine the length and direction of the cable, pipes or other similar objects, take the readings of the device in several more places at a distance of about 20 feet from each other. If the pipe is straight, then you will get a straight line after connecting the obtained points.
Step 4
If the pipe or cable is large or hollow, reduce the sensitivity of the device with the Sens knob. In the case when the arrow of the metal detector reaches its maximum value and a loud signal is heard, reduce its sensitivity in order to determine the maximum values of the arrow of the device at a point less than 100. At the same time, move a quarter step back or forward. If possible, practice with objects, size and the depth of which you know. When using a metal detector, remember: if the signal is stronger than expected, then there are several objects; if the object is located very deeply, then the metal detector may not detect it; the marks you make on the ground do not serve as indicators of the length or size of the item you are looking for; if the items you are looking for are small, then you need to place the marks at a closer distance.
