Instructions

Step 1

A router is designed to distribute a signal between fragments of a computer network or individual computers. Connect one end of the network cable to the modem and the other to one of the connectors on the router. The slot name (WLAN, WAN, etc.) depends on the specific model. Make sure both the modem and the router are plugged in. Some models of routers are supplied with a disc with special software that is installed on a computer. If there is such a disk, install the programs available on it, they are designed to configure the device.

Step 2

Establish a connection between the computer and the router. If this is your first time making such a connection, use an Ethernet cable so you can set up a wireless network. To connect, use a network cable, one end of which is connected to the Ethernet connector of the computer, and the other to one of the ports of the router marked 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

Step 3

Open a browser, enter the IP address of the router in the address bar of the program. As a result, a page with router settings will open. Enter your username and password to access the settings, they must be specified in the documentation for the device. The IP address depends on the device manufacturer, for example:

• D-Link - 192.168.0.1

• Linksys - 192.168.1.1

• Netgear - 192.168.0.1

• 3Com - 192.168.1.1

• Belkin - 192.168.2.1

In some cases, the address of the router is indicated on the packaging box or instructions. If it is not listed anywhere, visit the manufacturer's official website and use the help of the support service.

Step 4

Internet connection setup is usually done automatically. The router receives all the necessary parameters from the modem. To set up a Wi-Fi connection, go to the wireless settings section. Find the SSID field and enter an arbitrary network name in it, make sure the Enable SSID Broadcast checkbox is checked. The rest of the parameters can be left unchanged.

Step 5

To connect to the network you created, the user will need to enter a password on their device. To secure the connection, create a complex password consisting of a random sequence of letters and numbers. In addition, be sure to change the username and password to access the settings of the router itself, this will exclude unauthorized changes to the network settings.
