How to check the quality of a telephone line

It is necessary

  • - a computer;
  • - modem;
  • - phone line.

Instructions

Step 1

To determine the quality of communication on your telephone line, connect a modem to your computer, for example, D-Link DSL 2500U / BRU / D. If your modem is connected as a bridge, go to the properties of the local network and register the IP address of the modem as shown in the image. If you do not do this, you will not be able to contact the modem to check the telephone connection

Step 2

Go to https://orencode.info/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=100&d=1266438205 to download the phone line checker application. To download, register on the forum, this is a standard procedure, it will not take much of your time. Unpack the archive and install the program on your computer. Connect the telephone cable to the modem and turn it on. Then launch DLink Line Info app.

Step 3

Enter the IP-address of the modem in the program window, then click the "Refresh" button to take readings of the line characteristics. The more graph readings that the program builds as a result of measurements, the better your telephone line. You can also draw conclusions about this from the program report. Find the following characteristics in it: Noise Margin and Attenuation.

Step 4

Estimate the value of noise immunity, if it is less than 6, then the line is very bad, there are problems with synchronization on it. The value of this parameter is from 7 to 10 - failures are possible on it. From 11 to 20 - the line is good. If the indicator is 21 or more - the line is very good, there will be no interference.

Step 5

Then look at the signal attenuation parameter, if it is less than 20, then your line is excellent. The normal value is between 20 and 40. If the value is between 40 and 50, then the line will fail. Synchronization will periodically disappear if the indicator is between 50 and 60. If it is above 60, then the equipment will not work.
