The choice of a coffee grinder largely depends on the device in which you are preparing coffee. Some coffee lovers prefer complete control over the size of the coffee powder, while others just need to grind the coffee, which also greatly influences the choice. It is also helpful to imagine how much money you are willing to spend on a device.
Instructions
Step 1
If you are preparing coffee in a coffee machine or coffee maker, then read the instructions for the device. Usually it says what grind the coffee should be so that the coffee maker is not damaged and the drink tastes the best. These recommendations should be followed.
Step 2
You should start by choosing the type of coffee grinder. They are millstones and rotary. A rotary coffee grinder, also called a knife grinder, has knives in the mechanism, which grind coffee beans when the rotor rotates. You can compare the principle of its operation with a mixer or blender. A burr coffee grinder has a small mill in its mechanism, by means of which the grains are crushed.
Step 3
Knife grinders are the most inexpensive and most popular. However, they have several disadvantages. Firstly, a knife grinder crushes the grain into small pieces, so no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to literally erase it into powder. Secondly, with a knife grinder it is impossible to control the size of the grind. The longer you grind the beans, the finer the particles will be, but the coffee powder will still not be smooth. It is for this reason that this option is not suitable for some types of coffee makers.
Step 4
A coffee grinder with burrs has two metal burrs, between which a certain distance can be set. It is this that regulates the size of the coffee grind. With a millstone coffee grinder, you can get exactly the degree of it that is necessary for a specific cooking method (for example, larger for a French press or dust for a Turk). In general, only a burr coffee grinder allows you to adjust the grinding, which is a decisive factor in choosing for capricious types of coffee machines.
Step 5
Whichever type of grinder you choose, it is also important to choose the right size. The peculiarity of knife grinders is that you can grind only the "correct" amount of beans provided by the manufacturer of the device. If you add a little less or a little more beans, the quality of the grind deteriorates significantly. That is why it is especially important for knife grinders to choose their volume correctly. With millstone coffee grinders, this issue is not so acute, only the maximum volume is important (if you plan to prepare coffee in large quantities), since there is no minimum limit.
Step 6
Another important parameter is the power of the grinder. It is not recommended to choose a knife-type device that is too powerful, since an increase in this parameter is achieved by accelerating the operation of the device, which can lead to heating of the grains, due to which they lose their taste. The power of burr coffee grinders is usually much higher than that of knife grinders, but this is due to the area of the burrs.
Step 7
The next thing to evaluate is the enclosure and safety of the device. Make sure your grinder is made from quality plastics. If the coffee grinder is a knife, it should not turn on when the case is open, this is unsafe for fingers. It is recommended to buy devices from reliable and trusted brands, as this serves as a guarantee of the quality of the coffee grinder.
