Among the various types of drives designed for writing and reading data, the so-called Card-Reader stands out (card reader or reader). This compact device connects to a standard USB connector and acts as a memory card storage device. Card readers are versatile, fairly reliable, and easy to use.
The technical characteristics of the card reader and the number of formats of cards it reads are determined by the model, the type of USB interface used, the features of the hardware and software of the computer, and the type of information being processed.
Portable devices for processing electronic cards may differ in their principle of operation. Most often, you have to deal with traditional contact card readers, which assume the highest data transfer rate. In some areas of technology, contactless electronic card readers are used. Magnetic devices capable of reading information from magnetic stripes are also widely used.
The classic Card-Reader has four slots for memory cards and a power indicator based on an LED. Certain models of card readers are equipped with an additional indicator that allows you to monitor the progress of writing and reading information.
Modern advanced models of card readers are capable of handling more than sixty memory card formats. In addition, you can connect a microphone and additional devices that have not only a USB interface, but also FireWire. The standard set of the device usually includes a CD with drivers for several operating systems, including those that are gradually being phased out.
To use the Card-Reader, it must be connected to the appropriate port on the computer and a supported memory card inserted into the slot. After the computer detects the device, the system will show the presence of all removable drives that correspond to the number of slots in the card reader.
Care must be taken when working with the card reader. Under no circumstances should excessive force be used when inserting the card. Otherwise, there is a risk of damage. Make sure the card is firmly inserted; if the required contact is not available, the memory card will not be read and will not be displayed in the system.
