Measuring equipment is often connected to a COM port. This allows you to remotely take readings or adjust the parameters of the equipment. Let's connect to a multimeter over the network using the MOXA NPort Model 5650I-8-DT Serial Port Server, which is often used in various enterprises.
Necessary
- - power supply PST-3202;
- - Serial port server, for example, MOXA NPort 5650;
- - Ethernet network cable;
- - DB9F-DB9F cable;
- - Personal Computer.
Instructions
Step 1
The MOXA NPort Serial Port Server has multiple COM ports for connecting serial devices and multiple Ethernet ports for connecting the server to the network.
It must be connected via Ethernet to the network, and you must know the IP address of the device. The address is displayed on the LCD screen on the front panel.
Step 2
Let's start by setting up the serial port settings to which we are going to connect the power supply. Let's connect the MOXA server to the local network and connect to it via the web interface. Let's go through any browser using the IP address to the MOXA server control panel. In the settings, open the Serial Settings section, select the desired port and set its settings.
Step 3
To control the power supply over the network, we will use the serial port to which it is connected as a TCP server. To do this, go to the Operation Settings section through the web interface and select the TCP Server operating mode for this port.
Step 4
Now let's connect the PST-3202 power supply or other equipment that you want to control remotely to the COM port. This power supply understands the language of very simple commands, which we will send to it over the network. For example, to read the specified voltage in channel 2, you need to send the CHAN2: VOLT? Command to the power supply COM port, and to set the voltage to 5, 2 V at its output, send the CHAN2: VOLT 5.2 command.
To control the power supply, you need any client program that can connect to a TCP server and send commands over the network. You can write the client yourself or use any ready-made program.
