Step 1
Take another work computer. Carefully disconnect the wires from the power supply and remove it. Connect the power supply to be tested. And try starting your computer. If it does not turn on, check again that all wires are connected correctly and start again. If the computer does not turn on again, then your power supply has burned out.
Step 2
If you don't have another work computer close at hand, remove the power supply and open it. Take a close look at everything inside. If you see swollen capacitors, smell a burning smell, or see a spilled gummy liquid on the board, then your power supply has burned out.
Step 3
If no damage is found inside, you must try to start the power supply separately from the computer. Most of the power supplies are equipped with load resistors (some Chinese models may be an exception), so it will be safe to short-circuit the wires and test the power supply.
Step 4
Place the power supply on the floor and check that there are no metal objects underneath. Take the ribbon cable that connects to the motherboard, select the black and green wire. Connect both wires with a regular paper clip. Any metal object can be used instead of a paper clip. If the power supply turns on (the cooler starts working, the drive LED turns on), then the problem is not in it. This is the easiest way to test your power supply.
Step 5
Next, it will be necessary to check the voltage at all outputs of the power supply unit. It can be of 3 types - +3, 3V (orange), + 5V (red and white), + 12V (yellow and blue). It is better to connect a small load to the power supply before testing, for example, a car light bulb. We take a multimeter and connect it to each output one by one. Before checking, it is better to blow out all connectors to remove accumulated dust. Small variations in voltage are acceptable. If the deviations are more than 0.5 V, then the problem is in this place.
