ISO is a measure of the camera's sensitivity to light source. The ISO parameter can be adjusted on most modern cameras. An incorrectly set setting leads to the appearance of noise, which significantly reduces the quality of the photo.

Usage

The ISO index determines how sensitive the camera's sensor should be to the light it receives. The higher the value of the parameter, the higher the sensitivity of the photocell to light penetrating through the lens. This function allows you to take pictures even in dark conditions. Thus, a properly adjusted ISO allows shooting even in low light conditions when the flash cannot be used. Also, an increase in the light sensitivity index makes it possible to achieve a higher shutter speed, which can be critical when you need to quickly shoot a frame.

Adjustment

The sensitivity parameters can be adjusted using a separate button near the display or on the top of the device. Also, on some devices, ISO adjustment is implemented by means of a special function wheel, which is usually located on the top or side panel. In conventional digital cameras, the sensitivity setting is called by a separate joystick button of the device and appears along with other parameters to adjust the resulting image.

The quality of the images will depend on the characteristics of the sensor. Most modern cameras can achieve a minimum amount of noise while increasing ISO. Most cameras have an automatic sensitivity selection function.

Also, semi-professional and professional machines can use the Auto ISO function with manually set limits. Thus, if the photographer sets ISO1600 as the limit, the camera will not select values that become higher than this value during automatic adjustment.

Parameters

The standard ISO sensor has 6 parameters, but some cameras may offer additional adjustable intermediate values. Common options include ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200. The rest of the parameters are very rarely used when shooting with amateur and semi-professional cameras.

The desired parameter should be chosen empirically based on the degree of illumination of the room or the amount of backlighting. Increasing the indicator will make it possible to take pictures, for example, on the street at night or at a concert in a theater. However, it should be noted that any excess of the values of the sensitivity settings leads to the appearance of noise in the photo. And if the ISO adjustment is not correct, the final image quality will be mediocre.
