Any car purchased from a manufacturer today is the result of a series of trade-offs that are the result of several factors. First, trying to squeeze the car into a certain price range. Secondly, the need to comply with exhaust gas standards. And thirdly, the desire to ensure the maximum service life and reliability of the machine. These factors provide many opportunities for improvement. There are different ways to increase the horsepower of a production engine.

Step 1
Replace the computer engine control chip. Sometimes, but not always, you can change the performance of a car by replacing the ROM chip in the engine control unit (ECU). Usually these chips can be purchased from auto tuning suppliers. First, it will be useful to read independent reviews of the chip, since some of them are just fakes and, therefore, you should not expect any effect.
Step 2
Improve the engine air supply. As the piston moves downward, during the intake stroke, air resistance can take away engine power. Some newer vehicles use polished intake manifolds to reduce air resistance. Also can improve air flow to the engine: large air filters, zero resistance filters and shortened air ducts.
Step 3
Improve the exhaust manifold system. Air resistance or back pressure makes it difficult for exhaust gases to escape from the cylinder, resulting in a loss of engine power. If the muffler creates a strong resistance to the exhaust gases or the exhaust pipe is too small, this can lead to an increase in back pressure. High performance exhaust systems use branched exhaust manifolds, oversized muffler pipes and straight-through muffler systems to significantly reduce exhaust back pressure.
Step 4
Replace the engine block head or camshaft. Many production engines have one intake valve and one exhaust valve per cylinder. Buying a new head with four valves per cylinder will significantly increase the flow of air in and out of the engine. This method is most effective and significantly increases engine power. Installing a variable-phase gas distribution system can also significantly increase engine horsepower.
