The card reader may not work for two reasons: problems with the software for the device or a hardware problem. A novice user can also update the software for the card reader, but in the event of a technical malfunction, it is better to contact the service center.
While working on modern computers, such a problem often arises when the card reader stops working. As a rule, in such an unpleasant situation any user can easily figure it out, regardless of his level of computer skills. To determine the reason for the inoperability of the card reader, you just need to perform certain actions. In case the problems were in the software, then this can be easily fixed. But if the breakdown is already in the device itself, then it will not always be advisable to repair such a card reader.
Checking the software of the card reader
So, if the card reader just a couple of minutes ago worked fine, but now it is no longer functioning, then you need to start diagnostics with the software. To do this, go to the "Start" menu, then find the item "Control Panel" and select "Device Manager". Or you can call the context menu on the shortcut "My Computer", go to its properties and select the same item "Device Manager" there.
Then you need to find the USB Controllers group and make sure that there are no warning signs (for example, an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle). If there is such a sign, then you need to reinstall the drivers on the motherboard. Drivers are usually provided on the CD that comes with the computer / laptop. If there is no disk, you can download the drivers from the manufacturer's official website.
It is also advisable to reinstall the software for the card reader. After removing the drivers, you need to clean the system using special programs and only then start installing the software. Sometimes drivers for card readers can be built into the operating system, and as soon as the system recognizes the device, it will automatically install the drivers for it.
Sometimes the reason that the card reader does not work may be incorrect settings in the BIOS. They can be knocked down by a virus or by an inexperienced user. To enter BIOS, you need to press the "Delete" button several times when the system boots. Then you need to find the item "Load optimized defaults" and press Enter. To the question that appears, you need to answer "Yes". To save the changes and exit the BIOS, you need to press the F10 button, you also need to answer “Yes” to another question that appears. After that, the computer will restart and the card reader should work.
Hardware failure
If the device still does not work, there may be a hardware failure. You will need to open the system unit, disconnect the card reader and carefully examine it. As a rule, not everyone understands such devices, so it is best to take the card reader to a service center, and then look at the situation there - repair it or buy a new one.
