It is possible to type and print a book having a personal computer, a printer and software that can provide the ability to control these processes. The most common program of this kind available is the Microsoft Office Word text editor. The following is a sequence of steps using an example version of Word 2007.

Instructions

Step 1

Bring the sheets of text into an easy-to-print book format. To do this, load the source file into the editor by finding it in the standard file open dialog. You can launch this dialog by clicking the round Office button in the upper left corner of the window and choosing Open from the menu. An alternative way is to press the CTRL + O keyboard shortcut.

Step 2

Click on the Page Layout tab located on the Ribbon at the top of the editor interface. Click the Margins icon in the Page Setup section of commands - it is located closer to the left edge of the ribbon. In the drop-down list, click the lowest item ("Custom Fields") to access detailed page formatting settings.

Step 3

Find the drop-down list next to "Multiple Pages" in the "Pages" section on the Fields tab that opens by default. Expand the list and select the line "Brochure" - this is the name of the book format of placing pages on a sheet in this editor. As a result, in this section the editor will display one more drop-down list - “the number of pages in the brochure”. If, for example, you want to split a book into several volumes, then set in this field the limit on the number of pages in the future book. If the limitation is not needed, then leave the default value ("All").

Step 4

Adjust, if necessary, the margins between the text and the edges of the printed sheet, as well as between the text and the flyleaf of the book. These settings are located in the "Fields" section of this tab.

Step 5

The pages will print two on each sheet, so if you want the book to be larger (or smaller) than half a standard A4 sheet, go to the Paper Size tab. In the upper section there is a drop-down list of standard formats - select the one you need. If you will be using custom paper for printing, enter the dimensions in centimeters in the Width and Height input boxes below.

Step 6

To print the page numbers at the outside edge of the sheet, click the Paper Source tab and check the Odd and Even Pages box in the Distinguish Headers and Footers section. Here you can specify the size of the margins between the headers and footers and the edges of the sheets, as well as cancel the printing of the header and footer (including the page number) on the first sheet of the book.

Step 7

Click OK and save your changes (CTRL + S).

Step 8

Check if the printer is ready to print book pages and press CTRL + P. As a result, a print dialog will open, in which, for example, you can set the number of copies and select a printer if there are several of them installed on the system. You can do without this dialog if you open the editor menu, go to the "Print" section and click the "Quick Print" item.
