A unified structure of international subscriber numbers has been established throughout the world. Its formula is Kc-ABC-abx1-x5. The maximum length of an international number is limited to 15 characters. The first three digits (Kc) indicate the country code. The maximum code length is three digits. The length and structure of the national number is assigned by the communications administration of the country itself. For example, the code for Japan is 081, China is 086, Russia is 7 (007), Ukraine is 380.

Taking into account the current standards, for subscribers of the Russian Federation, the national number has a ten-digit format with the formula: DEF-avx1x2x3x4x5 or ABC-avx1x2x3x4x5, where avx1x2x3x4x5 is a zone number. For those residents of cities who have seven-digit telephone numbers, the last signs and numbers - abx1 - x5 - is an internal city number, for example: 953-9856.
Step 3
Communication of the whole country is divided into zones (geographical and non-geographical). Each zone is assigned its own code, thanks to which it is possible to determine from where the call was made. The first 3 digits are considered area codes ABC (geographic area) and DEF (non-geographic). With the numbering of geographic zones, everything is simple. For example, the code of Moscow is 095, Petersburg is 812. A number of subjects have additional codes in stock, for example, Moscow - 499, Moscow region - 498. Non-geographic numbering zone (DEF code) helps to organize a single whole numbering space for corporate networks that operate on the territory of the whole country or only a number of subjects of the federation. DEF codes are called federal.

To determine which region a particular code belongs to, go to the Rostelecom website and enter the full subscriber's number or just the phone code into the search engine. The system also works in the reverse mode: you can enter the name of the city (region), and you will be offered all the codes assigned to this subject.

For some time, telephone directories were published in large quantities, in order to determine the city by phone number, use its printed edition. Often on the endpapers of modern diaries, a list of codes of the largest cities is placed as reference information. You can also use them.
