Most often, the need to replace a hard drive on a laptop is due to the fact that it fails or its volume is insufficient for the needs of the user. In both cases, you can solve the problems that have arisen by replacing the hard drive with a new, larger one.

Before purchasing a new hard drive, check in the description of your laptop model what type of hard drive is inside (SATA or IDE). Usually, modern computers use a SATA hard drive, but many people still actively use laptops with an IDE hard drive (both options are 2.5 inches, which is smaller than the size of a HDD for a desktop computer).

Helpful hint: in order to change the hard drive in a laptop, you will need a set of screwdrivers, for example, the so-called sentries. The fact is that the screws that hold all the elements of the laptop are fastened with screws that are noticeably smaller than in a stationary computer.

In order to change the hard drive, most laptop models have a special cover, by unscrewing the screw from which, you can immediately access the hard drive installed on the laptop. However, there are rare models in which to change the HDD you will have to disassemble the lower part of the laptop (the half on which the keyboard is installed) completely. If you turned the laptop over, unscrewing the screws from the existing covers and did not find a hard drive under one of them, you better contact a specialist. But for most laptop owners, everything is simple - just unscrew one or two screws from the rectangular cover, remove it and thus easily gain access to the installed hard drive.

In laptops, the hard drive is installed in a special sled (it may look like a small box or two light rails). Before removing the old hard drive from the laptop, remove the sleds screwed to it with small screws and transfer them to the new hard drive. The sled can also be screwed onto the laptop itself. Pull the hard drive out of the laptop only by a special plastic tab or stop, as if moving the hard drive in a slide like a drawer from a table (less often, the hard drive just needs to be pulled vertically).

After installing the new hard drive in the chassis in the laptop chassis, tighten the screw on the chassis cover. After installing a new hard drive in a laptop, you will need to install an operating system on it so that you can continue to use the computer as usual.

Helpful advice: before all manipulations, be sure to disconnect the laptop from the mains and remove the battery from it!
