Modern monitors are distinguished by their compact dimensions and high quality of the transmitted picture. However, they are not all based on liquid crystals. Models where LEDs are installed are called LED monitors. Most often, LEDs are used in the construction of screens of large and extra-large format.

What is an LED monitor?

To build an image in such monitors, LEDs are used, each of which is responsible for the transmission of one or more colors and acts as one sub-pixel or pixel, respectively. Due to the fact that LEDs are independent sources of light radiation, they allow you to build a picture with maximum brightness and contrast. However, they have another significant drawback, namely the relatively large size of the LEDs themselves.

So far it is not possible to construct a screen matrix with such small LEDs, which at the same time would retain their glow brightness in order to compare with liquid crystal matrices. Nevertheless, LED monitors have found their market niche, in which they are practically irreplaceable so far - these are outdoor advertising and huge screens used in sports stadiums or at concerts, etc. It is from the LEDs that such huge screens can be made with very good image quality and a relatively low cost. At a great distance, at which advertising, information screens and boards are installed, the size of the diode is not significant, and the human eye already sees an integral picture, unable to see individual diodes, even if they are 5-10 mm in diameter.

Features of the structure of LED monitors

The advantage of diode monitors is the way they build the screen as a whole. To do this, use smaller typesetting panels, most often square. The panels consist, for example, of a matrix of 64 diodes on each side. Each panel has its own control and information bus through which the image is transmitted. These separate panels are already being assembled into a one-piece screen. In this case, in fact, it does not matter what the resulting dimensions of the screen will be, the main thing is that the main controller knows this, which will control all the panels at the same time.

This design is another positive feature of LED monitors. If one of the panels breaks down, the rest of the screen continues to work as if nothing had happened, displaying the rest of the picture. Repair is also easy: it is worth replacing a separate section of the damaged screen, and it will work as before. The long lifespan of the LEDs themselves also affects the reliability of LED monitors.

With the development of electronics and diode design, it is expected that desktop monitors can be replaced by diode arrays when the size of a single pixel assembled from diodes is comparable to a pixel on an LCD matrix.

What else can they mean by the name LED monitor

Sometimes, by mistake, an LED monitor is called a conventional liquid crystal desktop monitors, in which diodes are used as a backlight. However, it would be more correct to say that this is not an LED monitor, but a monitor with LED backlighting.
