Headphones of a wide variety of sizes and types are used in many electronic devices such as iPods or mobile phone headsets. Sometimes, with careless handling, the connector through which the headphones are connected to the device breaks down. Repairing a connector usually does not take long and does not require professional equipment.

It is necessary

  • - soldering iron;
  • - flux;
  • - solder;
  • - threads.

Instructions

Step 1

Examine the electronic device to which the headphones are connected. A possible reason for the lack of sound may be a dirty connector. In this case, clean the jack for the plug with a sharpened match or a toothpick. If necessary, clean the miniature plug (sometimes called a "jack") of any dirt.

Step 2

If the described measures do not work, check if the device works with other (working) headphones of the same type. In the absence of sound, and in this case, the cause should be sought in the part of the connector located on the electronic device.

Step 3

Disassemble the device by unscrewing the fasteners. Run your fingernail or pointed object (preferably not metal) along the joint connecting the body parts. After disassembling, inspect the socket where the plug is inserted. Check how reliable the electrical contacts are. If necessary, restore the connections by heating them with a soldering iron.

Step 4

If the socket of the connector is working properly, proceed with the repair of the plug ("jack"). It can be in different designs, but always consists of a ring, sleeve and tip. Disassemble the connector and inspect the soldering pad. If it is nickel-plated, clean it off and tin with a soldering iron.

Step 5

Strip the wires leading from the plug to the headphones. Shorten the wire that is formed by the twisted cores of the screen. Otherwise, it may be closed.

Step 6

Slip protective tubes over the wires, and then solder the wires to the jack pins. The tubes can now be slid onto the contacts.

Step 7

Solder the common wire to the connector. In this case, it is undesirable to use low-melting solder. If the tip of the soldering iron is too wide, it is advisable to narrow it down with a file.

Step 8

Insert the cable into the mount. For reliability, wind a few turns of harsh thread around the wire. Secure the thread by dropping heated rosin on its turns (a regular knot will weaken the fastening).

Step 9

Screw the protective cap onto the connector. Insert the plug into the connector and check its serviceability by connecting it to the player. If everything is done carefully and correctly, you will hear the long-awaited sound from the headphones.
