Many users of USB modems are faced with the question of enhancing the signal quality. This problem can be solved by connecting an additional antenna. You can buy it in a special store or save money and make it yourself from scrap materials.

Necessary

  • - plastic bottle;
  • - foil paper;
  • - insulating tape.

Instructions

Step 1

Take an empty plastic bottle of at least 2 liters. The larger it is, the better the characteristics of the created antenna will be. In the middle, make a petal-shaped notch that will be about the size of your modem. Prepare in advance a USB cable for connecting the modem, which in length will take into account the proposed installation site of the homemade antenna.

Step 2

Bend the petal a little and attach the modem to its inner side with electrical tape. Route the USB extension cable through the neck of the bottle and connect to the modem. Close the petal. As a result, the main part of the future antenna will be made, which is called the radiator. However, in this form, the signal will be scattered completely uselessly in a circle, so it is necessary to make the radiation directional so that the homemade device gets the characteristics of a real antenna.

Step 3

Attach a reflector on the wall opposite to the modem installation. It can be made from foil paper or foil, which can be taken from a pack of cigarettes or chocolates. Attach it with electrical tape. The reflector should be twice the height of the modem, and the width should be equal to half the circumference of the bottle. Make 4-5 cm cuts along the top and bottom edges of the bottle so that the edges of the reflector are slightly bent to the sides relative to the tangent circle. As a result, the optimal antenna shape for the modem will be obtained.

Step 4

Place the homemade antenna in an upright position wherever you want. In this case, the bottom of the bottle should be on top to protect the device from moisture in case of rain. Rotate the antenna so that it points towards the nearest base station of your cellular operator. If you also place a Bluetooth adapter in the bottle, you can increase the range of its reception in order to communicate with a remote computer or other device.
