However, if you are using MobileMe, you can use Find My iPhone. This feature is also available for free on all iPhones running iOS 4.2.

Instructions
Step 1
To set up the "Find iPhone" function, go to "Settings" and then to "Mail, contacts, calendars". Click "Add Account" and from the menu that opens, select MobileMe. If you have an Apple ID and password, enter them, if not, click Create Free Apple ID and follow the simple onscreen instructions. Now you need to verify your account. Check your inbox for a letter from Apple. Follow the link provided in the email and sign in with your Apple ID. On the MobileMe screen, turn on Find My iPhone. A message will immediately appear in which you can click "Allow" or "Cancel". Click "Allow".
Step 2
Once you have set up Find My iPhone, you can easily find your iPhone if it is lost. First, you will be able to locate your iPhone. To do this, simply enter the site. www.me.com or use the described method to activate the "Find iPhone" function on another device (iPhone, iPad or iPod touch). You will see a map showing the location of your iPhone
Step 3
But that's not all. If you touch the icon that indicates the position of your iPhone on the map with your finger, a screen will open in front of you where you can choose your next actions. By clicking on the "Send message" button, you will display a message on the screen of your iPhone. If, after looking at the map, you realize that the iPhone is next to you, you can click on the "Beep" button. Your iPhone will play a long and loud beep, even if you switched it to silent mode before.
Step 4
You can also use the "Remote Password Setting" service. After you click on the button with the corresponding name, you will be asked to enter a four-digit code. This way, you will remotely set a password to protect the data on your phone. In the worst case, when you think that you will not be able to get your iPhone back, you can click on "Remote wipe" and all your personal information will be erased.
