The need to build up a TV cable most often arises when moving a TV to another place in the room. In order not to degrade image quality, certain rules must be followed when extending the cable.
Instructions
Step 1
When lengthening a cable, the first thing to do is look at its center core. If it is made of one thick copper wire, use two regular F-connectors and one I-connector, which can be purchased from any TV equipment store.
Step 2
For a high-quality connection, you must prepare a cable for the F-connector. First, cut the end of the cable straight. Then strip off 15 mm of insulation. Do this carefully so as not to damage the braid. After removing the insulation, wrap the braid back, remove the foil underneath.
Step 3
Strip off ten millimeters of insulation around the center conductor - that is, strip the center wire about a centimeter. Now screw on the F-connector until it stops, while the back-wrapped braid is clamped between the connector body and the outer sheath of the cable.
Step 4
Carefully bite off the center wire protruding from the outer edge of the F-connector with pliers - so that it protrudes only 2 millimeters. Prepare the end of the second piece of cable in the same way. After both F-connectors are screwed on, connect them with the I-connector. When screwing on the F-connectors, take care that there is no short circuit between the braid and the center conductor.
Step 5
If the center wire of the cable is stranded, you will need connectors specifically for this type of cable. Cut off a few centimeters of the cable and take it with you to the store to help you choose the right connector.
Step 6
The cable with a stranded center conductor can be lengthened by soldering. With proper soldering, there is no visible degradation in signal quality. First, strip off three centimeters of outer insulation from the ends of the cables to be connected. Then, on one cable, untwist the braid to a length of 20 millimeters, twist into four bundles and carefully tin.
Step 7
On the second cable, carefully cut 15mm of the braid. Tin the remaining 5 millimeters. Do this carefully so as not to melt the insulation under the braid. Strip the center conductors of the cables 15 mm, stripping off the insulation in two pieces. Twist the central cores and solder them carefully. Place the two removed pieces of insulation on the center conductor and insulate it by melting the insulation with a soldering iron.
Step 8
Solder the four braids of the first cable to the tinned 5 millimeters of the outer sheath of the second cable. Put on the connection point a piece of insulation cut along the same cable and fuse it with the cable insulation. Despite the fact that a good quality connection can be obtained by soldering, the best result is achieved when using F-connectors. This method is much less laborious, so it is better to use it, choosing the right connector for the cable you have.
