Packaging and equipment.

A bright red box without pictures and decorations, and inside there is a neat glued molding for a charger and a micro-USB cable, as well as a "paper clip" of the tray. One of the pleasant bonuses is a transparent silicone case, which slightly increases the dimensions of the device.

Appearance

The more attentively you examine the gadget, the more thoughtful little things you notice. The front part is covered with glass rounded at the edges with a thin plastic frame - in the test copy it is white. Above the screen in the glass there is a small cutout for the speaker, to the right of which is the front camera, to the left is the light, proximity and LED flash. In the upper right corner there is an LED indicator of missed events.

There are no buttons under the display, as well as metal on the edges. It was replaced by plastic - Xiaomi Redmi 5 has much less metal than its predecessors. At the top, a 3.5 mm connector is made up of an additional microphone and an infrared port for controlling household appliances. Below are two symmetrical blocks of holes for the microphone and the main speaker, and between them micro-USB.

On the left side there is a combined tray: for two nano-SIM cards, or one SIM card and microSDXC. On the right are comfortable metal power and volume keys.

The metal back of the smartphone looks familiar. Above the center, a single camera with a small lens in the center protrudes noticeably, below there is an LED flash and a fingerprint scanner.

Ergonomics

The dimensions indicated in the table of technical characteristics of the smartphone do not correspond to the sensations from its daily use: in fact, the device lies in the hand as comfortably as most five-inch compact state employees, and the thickness of 7.7 mm plays an important role here. In most situations, Xiaomi Redmi 5 is comfortable to operate with one hand, and even the notification curtain can be pulled out without finger acrobatics. The workmanship of the gadget is excellent.

Apparatus in operation

What we love about Redmi devices is their commitment to Qualcomm hardware. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 smartphone is no exception, its basis is the current budget chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 with an eight-core Cortex-A53 processor at 1.8 GHz, 3 GB of RAM and an Adreno 506 graphics accelerator. also two or four gigabytes, and built-in memory 16 or 32 GB - a combined slot for a microSDXC memory card will be useful in any case.

The speed of work when performing most routine tasks is simply impeccable. Not a hint of lags and sluggishness, quick opening of any game and application. Comfort is at the level of a flagship, and this is on a budget employee with a wide screen! But there is a premonition that not everything is so smooth, and the benchmarks will surely tell the truth.

Indeed, a comfortable 60 thousand in AnTuTu and a modest lag show in SlingShot make it clear that a miracle has not happened. The next word for Gamebench and a couple of resource-intensive games. Interestingly, the smartphone practically does not heat up during game battles and the work of resource-intensive applications. Of course, this is due to the 14nm process technology and modest power consumption of the Cortex-A53 cores. There are no problems with watching videos in HD resolution, especially when it comes to films with theatrical aspect ratio. But 4K in regular players slows down terribly.

Camera

By the standards of modern devices, the implementation of cameras in Xiaomi Redmi 5 is boring. The main 12-megapixel Omnivision OV12A10 sensor with 1, 2 µm grain, autofocus optics and a conventional LED flash. Front-facing five-megapixel camera with fixed optics based on the Omnivision OV5675 sensor and with a grain of just over one micron. Of the chips, the front-facing camera only has a flash, and the software for working with the camera is traditionally geared towards automatic mode with a minimum number of settings, except that locking the exposure and focus is convenient and easily accessible.

Wireless connection

Both slots for nano SIM-cards support work in third-generation networks, but only one of them can be used for the needs of the mobile Internet.

Pros:

fast and stable;

excellent workmanship;

good performance and autonomy.

Minuses:

lack of NFC;

no Wi-Fi ac support;

plastic case.
