The way a motherboard is supplied with power depends on its form factor: AT or ATX. Some powerful boards also require an additional connector to power the processor.

Instructions

Step 1

Perform all operations with the computer de-energized.

Step 2

Power your AT motherboard using two single row flat connectors, each with 6 pins. They have keys that make it impossible to connect each of them upside down. However, it is very easy to confuse them, and if this is done, the motherboard will burn out. In order to exclude such a development of events, remember a simple rule: the connectors should be located so that the black wires are in the middle, and orange and red are facing the sides.

Step 3

Use a single 20-pin or 24-pin connector to connect power to an ATX motherboard. It is impossible to put it on incorrectly thanks to the keys. A 24-pin power supply can also be connected to a board equipped with a 20-pin mating connector without using pins 11, 12, 23, 24. Connect the same 20-pin power supply to a motherboard designed for a 24-pin connector, you can not.

Step 4

Some motherboards designed for use with powerful processors have an additional four-pin connector. Two black wires with zero potential are suitable for it, as well as two yellow ones, through which +12 V voltage is supplied. Only a power supply unit with this connector can be used with such a board. You cannot turn on the computer when it is not connected.

Step 5

There are video cards that also require additional power supply. It is fed to them through a connector of a similar shape, but different in both the set of voltages and the configuration of the keys. Do not try to connect the connector designed for powering the video card to the motherboard and vice versa. However, you will not be able to do this, and precisely for the reason that the configuration of the keys for these connectors is different.
